Audi a eu la joie de terminer la course finale du FIA WEC sur une note positive. Le constructeur a décroché son 6ème podium à São Paulo avec Tom Kristensen qui remporte un trophée pour sa dernière course en tant que pilote professionnel. Audi termine cette saison à la 2ème place du classement constructeurs, alors que Marcel Fässler/André Lotterer/Benoît Tréluyer (CH/D/F) prennent la 2ème place du classement pilotes. Le trio dans l’Audi R18 e-tron quattro numéro 2 a réalisé une remontée remarquable, de la dernière à la 5ème place.
Pour sa dernière course, Tom Kristensen a, une fois de plus, montré son talent. Avec Lucas di Grassi (BR) et Loïc Duval (F), le nonuple vainqueur du Mans, à la 3ème position, remporte son dernier trophée au Brésil. À la fin de la course, il s’impose face à la Toyota numéro 7, grâce à d’excellents temps au tour et une faible consommation de carburant. Le pilote danois, qui avait annoncé mettre fin à sa carrière, a vécu un week-end fort en émotions. Une médaille remise par l’Association Automobile Brésilienne, un tour d’honneur samedi, une inscription « Thanks Tom – Mister Le Mans » sur l’Audi R18 e-tron quattro numéro 1, des messages de tous les teams de WEC et un hommage sur le podium ont rendu cette finale inoubliable pour le pilote après 138 courses d’endurance, de GT et de voitures de tourisme avec Audi. Pour Lucas di Grassi aussi, ce résultat était spécial. Après un départ en position 6, le pilote brésilien, né à São Paulo, était en pleine forme pour cette course « à domicile ».
La voiture numéro 2 aussi avait des chances de terminer sur le podium. Après le 1er tour, Benoit Tréluyer a dû faire redémarrer le système et s’est retrouvé dernier de la course. Seulement 30 minutes plus tard, le pilote français avait atteint la 6ème position grâce à une remontée acharnée. Son coéquipier André Lotterer a tenu le rythme et enregistré le meilleur chrono. Les Champions du Monde 2012 ont terminé en 5ème position suite à des réparations de carrosserie. Après un accident de Mark Webber, lors duquel le pilote australien n’a pas subi de blessures majeures, une période de safety car a fini la course.
À la fin de la 3ème saison de FIA WEC, Audi dresse un bilan positif. En 24 courses depuis 2012, le constructeur a décroché 13 victoires (54 %), ce qui fait de lui le meilleur constructeur en catégorie LMP1. À cela s’ajoutent 2 titres de Champion du Monde aux classements pilotes et constructeurs en 2012 et 2013. Le temps fort de cette saison 2014 a été la victoire au Mans en juin, la 13ème victoire d’Audi pour la course iconique de 24 heures depuis 2000.
Déclarations après la course
Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich (Directeur d’Audi Motorsport): “This was a very emotional weekend. It’s fantastic that Tom Kristensen on his last double stint still defended the podium place. We managed to end the FIA WEC season on a positive note in Brazil. It’s great that we managed a podium finish although our aim, obviously, is to be on the very top of the podium.”
Chris Reinke (Chef du LMP): “2014 was an emotional roller-coaster ride for us. That was true for the Le Mans 24 Hours but applies to the WEC season as well. The way we closed the season wasn’t ideal but it ended on a positive note. The highlight of the weekend, no doubt, was the farewell of Tom Kristensen, who’s been with us for such a long time. We thank him very much – he had a part in shaping our sweetest successes.”
Ralf Jüttner (Directeur de l’équipe Audi Sport Team Joest): “Congratulations to Porsche on their first victory. We made the best of our potential. The greatest part about it is Tom finishing on podium in the final race. He more than deserved this champagne shower. If there’s a driver that can do a particularly good job of saving fuel while extracting the best possible performance from the Audi, it’s Tom. We’re taking a successful season finale into the winter break and will be going for all-out attack again in 2015.”
Lucas di Grassi (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “This was one of my toughest races of the whole season. At the end, with Tom’s farewell, the situation was very emotional again. We gave everything but, unfortunately, had a few minor problems. Still, we never gave up. It’s great to be on the podium here in my hometown São Paulo. And it’s particularly sweet to be able to share this moment with Tom – simply incredible!”
Loïc Duval (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “I’m happy about our successful close of the season, particularly for Tom. The race was anything but easy. But we were in contention and mounted the podium – a great reward for the team. And of course I’m happy that Mark Webber didn’t suffer any serious injuries.”
Tom Kristensen (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #1): “A big ‘thank you’ to everyone! I finished my first race with Audi at Sebring in 2000 on the podium and ending my career I’m on podium again – after a difficult race. To save another pit stop we had to drive more efficiently towards the end. That was on my stint. It was another exciting stage until the safety car was deployed. Congratulations to Porsche on their first victory and to Toyota on winning the title. And I’m happy to have spent my career at Audi with the best team in the world. Emotionally, this was the best weekend in my career.”
Marcel Fässler (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “It was a great honor for me to drive in the same team together with Tom Kristensen. Obviously, saying goodbye to such a great racer is a huge step and a loss for us. As far as our car is concerned: we were unfortunate right at the beginning and had to reset the systems. Unfortunately, that cost a lot of time and afterwards we started a recovery. In the end, the joy of being the runners-up in the World Championship outweighs anything else. It was a tough, difficult season that we can still be proud of with this final result.”
André Lotterer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “We drove another strong race at the end. I’m particularly happy for Tom Kristensen, who has crowned the end of his career with another podium place. Whenever a racing legend like Tom retires it’s a really special occasion. He’s been a role model for me and always inspired me. Actually, except for a few problems that unfortunately cost us the podium, our race went well. I enjoyed the car and the pace was right too. In addition, we managed to set the fastest race tour.”
Benoît Tréluyer (Audi R18 e-tron quattro #2): “I’m overjoyed that Tom was able to celebrate a podium result in his last WEC race. Just like his team-mates, he showed a remarkable performance. At the same time, I’d like to congratulate Porsche on their first victory. It was a difficult race for us and we suffered a few setbacks. Still, our car was fast. We scored some points again at the end – that was positive.”
